Tampa Bay defeats Detroit in extra innings 8/3/08

Monday, August 4th, 2008

The Tampa Bay Rays (66-44) beat the Detroit Tigers (55-56) Sunday in the 10th inning by a score of 6-5. The way they won was anything but ordinary, and ranks up there with the worst ways to lose a game (if you’re a Tigers fan). After Detroit got a run in the top of the tenth to go up 5-4, Tampa Bay’s outfielder Carl Crawford hit an RBI single in the bottom half of the 10th inning. Carlos Pena then drew a game-ending, bases-loaded walk. To make matters even worse for Detroit, the reason the bases became loaded was when Detroit pitcher Fernando Rodney issued a walk, than hit a batter to get two guys on. A sacrifice hit moved the runners to second and third, and Rodney again issued a walk to the next batter, before Pena drew his walk.  Speaking after the game, Detroit manager Jim Leyland had this quote: “You’ve got to step it up if you want to be in the hunt. You don’t want to be in the hunt, go home. Take an early vacation. Come back for spring training. We’ll bring some kids up to play. We should be embarrassed. I’m not sure enough people are.” Trever Miller was given the win, with Fernando Rodney taking the loss.

Mets fall to Astros in extra innings (8/2/08)

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

The New York Mets (58-52) took on the Houston Astros (52-57) in Houston Saturday night. It did not go as planned for New York. Once again, Johan Santana pitched a strong game and handed a 4-1 lead over to the bullpen. We all should have guessed what happened next.  Santana earns yet another no decision as the Mets lost to the Astros 5-4 in 10 innings.

Billy Wagner came in with the Mets up 4-2 and eventually loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning. Mark Loretta was on third with Hunter Pence, who was on second, immediately following him after a single by Geoff Blum.  Loretta collided with Mets catcher Ramon Castro, which jarred the ball loose.  Pence, still on Loretta’s heels, scored as well.  Loretta referenced himself playing football, as he said, “I felt like a fullback going in there. It was like a car wreck.”

The loss was big for the Mets, who now are two games behind NL East leading Philadelphia. Billy Wagner was charged with a blown save, and Aaron Heilman took the loss.  Jose Valverde was credited with the win.

Boston beats Oakland in 12 (8/1/08)

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

The Boston Red Sox (62-48) beat the Oakland Athletics (53-55) 2-1 Friday night in a tight 12 inning battle. Both of Boston’s runs came from newly acquired outfielder Jason Bay, who was involved in a three-team trade. Bay was brought in to replace Manny Rameriz, who was traded to the Dodgers. He led things off in the 12 by hitting a clutch triple, and eventually scored on a Jed Lowrie single. Red Sox fans went wild after he hit the triple, which left Bay to say this after the game: “It definitely ranks up there with one of the better moments I’ve had.” Oakland is currently in a major downfall, just 2-13 in its last 15 games. Mike Timlin was given the win, with Alan Embree taking the loss.

MLB picks - Philadelphia Phillies vs Saint Louis Cardinals 8/1/08 prediction and pick

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Friday night will matchup the Philadelphia Phillies (59-49) with the St. Louis Cardinals (61-50) at Busch Stadium. Both teams, fighting for a playoff spot, surprisingly did not make any moves at this years trade deadline, opting to remain with what they have down the stretch. The Phillies currently lead the NL East, and the Cardinals are tied with the Brewers for the lone National League Wild Card spot. This will surely be a game/series to watch closely. Game time is scheduled for 8:15 PM Eastern time in St. Louis.

Consider these criteria when determining a pick between the Phillies and the Cardinals:

- Cole Hamels (9-6, 3.27) will take the mound for the Phillies

- Kyle Lohse (12-3, 3.68) will pitch for St. Louis

- Both teams have identical home/away records, respectively: both are 30-25

- The Phillies are on a 5 game winning streak

Diamondbacks beat Dodgers 2-1 behind strong start by Webb 7/31/08

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Brandon Webb’s final tally: 8 innings pitched, with only 6 hits and one run. He walked one and struck out six. But the most important stat, as far as Arizona (56-52) is concerned, is that big fat W, since he earned the win last night. The win gave Webb his Major League leading 15th win of the season, and continues his dominance against the Los Angeles Dodgers (54-54). He is 8-0 in his last nine starts versus the Dodgers, while only allowing nine runs in 71 innings. Keep that in mind the next time they are both matched up (and it will likely happen again this season, with the amount of games they have left against each other).Brandon Webb’s final tally: 8 innings pitched, with only 6 hits and one run. Only one game separates the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks (55-52) with the Los Angeles Dodgers (54-53) in the NL West, so this will surely be a game to watch tonight. Both teams, with 55 games remaining, will face each other 10 times so each one knows how important these games should be.

Tigers 2 run 13th inning lifts them over Indians

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

On a night that lasted 5 hours and 33 minutes, we saw a game that had 526 total pitches, 42 base hits, 7 homeruns, and a combined total score of 26. The Detroit Tigers (54-52) eventually outscored the Cleveland Indians (46-59) in 13 to win the game, 14-12. Here is how the 13th inning went down: Carlos Guillen singled with one out in the 13th, and went to third on a Curtis Granderson single, his fifth hit. Guillen scored on Placido Polanco’s groundout. Granderson then scored the second run of the inning on a throwing error on a Matt Joyce infield single. There was also some history made in this game, albeit for the losing team. Cleveland’s catcher Kelly Shoppach tied a major league mark with five extra-base hits, including a game-tying homer in the ninth to send it into extra innings. Casey Fossum was given the win, with Juan Rincon taking the loss.
