Philadelphia beats Washington 8/19/08

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Tuesday night saw the Philadelphia Phillies (67-58) defeat the Washington Nationals (44-82) in what would turn out to be an important win for Philadelphia. Phillies SP Joe Blanton gave 4 runs in 5 innings and it looked like the Phils were going to lose the game to the lowly Nationals as they were down 4-1 when Blanton went out of the game.

But as soon as he left, the Phillies offense kicked into gear, scoring twice in the 5th inning, once in the 7th, and one more run again in the 8th to beat Washington 5-4. Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth hit the tiebreaking homerun in the 8th to give Philadelphia the lead. The Phillies are a major league best 56-0 when they are up going into the 9th inning. The loss was Washington’s 11th straight, their longest since moving to Washington.

Ryan Madson (3-1) was given the win, with Steven Shell (0-1) taking the loss. Brad Lidge closed out the game to earn his 31st save in 31 opportunities.

Tampa Bay defeats Los Angeles 8/18/08

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

On Monday night, the Tampa Bay Rays (76-48) defeated the Los Angeles Angels (76-47) by a score of 6-4 in a win that proved Tampa can hang with the top teams in baseball. The Rays are currently 5-2 against the Angels, the top team in MLB this season. Cliff Floyd and Eric Hinske both homered for the Rays. Surprising, the Angels have the best road record in MLB, but are 0-4 in Tropicana Field, the Rays home ballpark, this season.

The result of the game may have been overshadowed by a major base running mistake by Tampa Bay’s B.J. Upton, who decided to take his time on what should have been a routine double. He was tagged out at second by Angels first basemen Mark Teixeira. Upton, who is among the fastest players in the league, would not talk to reporters after the game.

Andy Sonnanstine (13-6) was given the win. Jon Garland (11-8) was given the loss. Dan Wheeler earned the save, his sixth of the season.

Milwaukee’s 9th run effort not enough to beat the Dodgers 8/17/08

Monday, August 18th, 2008

On Sunday afternoon, the Los Angeles Dodgers (64-60) defeated the Milwaukee Brewers (71-47) by a score of  7-5 to remain tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks atop the NL West. The win came largely from the bat of Andre Ethier, who had two homeruns in the game, including the 2 run walkoff to end the game. Milwaukee actually managed to tie the game in the top half of the 9th by scoring 4 runs to bring the total to 5-5, and the momentum looked to be in their favor. But Andre Ethier had other plans. His two homeruns, combined with teammates Matt Kemp and Manny Rameriz homers, helped give the Dodgers to win to remain competitive in the NL West.

Joe Beimel (4-0) was given the win, and Carlos Villanueva (4-6) was charged with the loss.

The Tampa Bay Rays (73-47) beat the Oakland Athletics (55-65) 7-6 in 12 innings on Thursday night. Seattle beats Angels in 12 innings 8/13/08

Friday, August 15th, 2008

On Wednesday night, the Seattle Mariners (46-75) beat the Los Angeles Angels (75-44) 10-7 in 12 innings. Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez, who is creeping closer to the single season saves record, blew his fifth save of the season. Seattle’s Wladimir Balentien hit a three-run homer with two outs in the 12th after striking out four times to give Seattle the victory. In the Angels case, they’ve built up such a big lead in the AL West, currently at 15 games above the Rangers, that they can afford to lose games without thinking much about it. Roy Corcoran allowed one hit over three innings to get the win and snap Seattle’s five-game losing streak. Newly acquired Mark Teixeira had two homeruns in the game for the Angles in the losing effort.

Roy Corcoran (3-0) was given the win, and Justin Speier (1-5) was given the loss.
