Red Sox beat Rangers in a high scoring game 8/12/08

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

If you had to describe last nights game between the Texas Rangers (61-59) and the Boston Red Sox (69-51) in one word, it would be this: Wild. In the first inning, the Red Sox grabbed a 10-0 lead on Texas, including two homeruns by Red Sox DH David Ortiz.  He became the 5th player in MLB history to hit two homers in the 1st inning alone. No one thought Texas would be able to make a game out of it at that point, but piece by piece, or rather, run by run, they managed to chip away at Boston’s lead, including an 8 run 5th inning and a 5 run 6th inning.  At that point, Texas miraculously had a 15-14 lead.  Both teams scored a run in the 7th inning to make it 16-15 in favor of Texas.
Going into the bottom of the eight inning, Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia hit an RBI double, one of five hits in the game for him, to tie the game at 16 all.  After intentionally walking David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis stepped up to the plate. Youkilis drove a three-run shot over Fenway Park’s Green Monster to give Boston a 19-16 lead, sending the Fenway Park crowd into a frenzy. Texas managed to score a run in the bottom of the 9th, but it wasn’t enough as Boston went on to win the game, 19-17. The teams combined for 36 runs (tying an AL record) and 37 hits.

Boston reliever Hideki Okajima (3-2) was given the win, with Texas reliever Frank Francisco (2-4) taking the loss.  Jonathan Papelbon was given the save, his 32nd of the season.

Brewers beat Nationals in extra innings 8/10/08

Monday, August 11th, 2008

The Milwaukee Brewers (67-51) won an important game vs. the Washington Nationals (44-77) on Sunday to improve and remain ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Wild Card race. The winning homerun was hit by Gabe Kapler, who prior to the HR was 0-6 with two strikeouts. This was Kapler’s first career walk off homerun, and it gave Milwaukee its fifth straight win. The homerun was hit off of Washington reliever Luis Ayala, who is not having a good season to put it mildly. He is 1-8 with a 6.04 ERA and 53.2 innings pitched. Kapler, who was starting for the injured Ryan Braun, hit the ball off of the foul pole to give his team the 5-4 win in 13 innings. “At first I thought it was going to stay fair for sure, then I saw it had kind of had a little lean to it,” Kapler said. “I wasn’t positive whether it would stay fair. I’m glad it did.”

Guillermo Mota (3-5) was given the win, with Luis Ayala (1-8) taking the loss.

Giants beat Dodgers in 10 innings 8/9/08

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

The San Francisco Giants (49-66) beat the Los Angeles Dodgers (49-66) 3-2 Saturday in a game that featured many Giants legends of past years. This was not a big offensive game, as the score was 1-1 entering the 10th inning. That was when Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent hit a leadoff homerun to give the Dodgers the 2-1 lead. The Dodgers failed to get another run in the inning, which proved to be costly.

Going into the bottom of the 10th, Giants outfielder Dave Roberts hit a leadoff double then took third on Randy Winn’s bloop single to left. Emmanuel Burris followed up with a bouncer to the pitcher, Dodgers reliever Jonathan Broxton, who fielded the ball and threw home. The ball skipped past Dodgers catcher Russell Martin to allow Roberts to score the tying run. With the bases eventually loaded, Giants outfielder Aaron Rowand stepped up to the plate and hit a RBI single through a drawn-in infield to give the Giants the walkoff win. “Any time you get an opportunity to have a walkoff, game-winning hit, those are some of the most exciting moments in your career, stuff that you don’t forget,” said Rowand.

This exciting game followed a pregame ceremony celebrating the Giants’ 50th anniversary in San Francisco. Many Giants outfield legends, like Willie Mays, Felipe Alou, and even Barry Bonds were honored.

Giants reliever Tyler Walker (4-6) was given the win, with Dodgers reliever Jonathan Broxton (2-3) taking the loss.

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

The Chicago Cubs (70-46) beat their rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals (64-54) 3-2 Friday night at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Someone who has played on both sides of the rivalry ended up being the main reason the Cubs won. Jim Edmonds, who spent 8 seasons in St. Louis, had two homeruns to give the Cubs 2 runs they otherwise would not have had. The game went into extra innings tied 2-2 until the bottom of the 11th inning, when Cubs catcher Henry Blanco’s bases-loaded single in the 11th drove in the winning run. The Cubs improved to 44-16 at home with the win.

Bob Howry (5-4) was given the win for Chicago, while Cardinals reliever Ryan Franklin (4-5) was charged with the loss.

Walk off win for the Mets 8/7/08

Friday, August 8th, 2008

The New York Mets (60-54) defeated the San Diego Padres (44-71) 5-3 Thursday night in what proved to be a memorable night for Mets third basemen David Wright. Wright hit his first walk off homerun off his career, a two out, two run homer in front of the home crowd at Shea Stadium. “I don’t know if it was a release of emotion or it just was everybody’s chance to get some free shots in on me. I think guys were taking advantage of giving me some rib shots and some jabs,” Wright said. “I’m always celebrating everybody’s else’s at home plate, and to get to be the one that jumps into the pile is pretty fun.”

In other, apparently not so surprising news, the Mets bullpen blew yet another lead that Johan Santana gave them. It’s almost expected at this point. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the sixth time in 24 starts this season that the bullpen cost Santana a potential win. Five of those six blown leads happened in the ninth inning alone. Santana currently has a 9-7 record, something that is not reflective of his performance at all.

Aaron Heilman (2-6) was given the win, with Heath Bell (4-5) taking the loss.
