NBA Games Recap 3/30/09

Only 4 games were played in the NBA last night and we’ll start with the one that wasn’t a foregone conclusion:

Dwight Howard because the youngest player to reach 5,000 rebounds passing Wilt Chamberlain by nearly two years when he got 22 points and 18 boards to help the Magic win 101-95 on Monday night. Orlando’s win kept them firmly in the 2nd spot in the Eastern Conference and underlined their dominance away from home. Rashard Lewis also played a large part in Orlando’s win scoring 21 points on a night when every Orlando starter scored double figures.

Dwayne Wade’s 42 points wasn’t enough for the Heat who dropped to 39-35 and are only 1 game in front of 6th place Philadelphia. The 5th spot is a crucial one because whoever takes it will get to play Atlanta in the first round of the play-offs instead of Boston, a much easier prospect.

In New Jersey the Nets carried on their shaky home form losing 107-78 to the Milwaukee Bucks. This game was over at half time when the Bucks were already up by 23; Milwaukee eventually won by 29 points and won the first 3 quarters easily. Richard Jefferson top scored with 29 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 66 percent while Charlie Villanueva had 20 points. No New Jersey player really performed the highest scorers being Brook Lopez and Devin Harris who each scored 10, Vince Carter only managed 9.

In Utah the Jazz blew a 24 point lead to the Knicks before rallying to beat them in the 4th quarter, 112-104. This was definitely not a game to be losing with every game being vital to getting best position in the Western Conference and this win pushed Utah up into 5th place. Deron Williams led Utah with 24 points and 13 assists for a double double while Carlos Boozer managed the same but with 21 points and 11 rebounds. With this loss New York moved to .392.

Finally a meaningless game in the West ended with a rare road win for the Memphis Grizzlies over the Golden State Warriors 114-109. O.J Mayo led the Grizzlies with 24 points and 10 assists while Mike Conley and Rudy Gay had 21 points a piece. The loss of Corey Maggette and Stephen Jackson hit the Warriors hard and Jamal Crawford and Monta Ellis couldn’t carry Golden State with 26 points and 29 points respectively.
