MLB picks - Chicago Cubs vs Milwaukee Brewers 7/29/08 prediction and pick

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Yesterday, the Cubs (62-44) faced the Brewers (60-46) ace, C.C. Sabathia.  Today, the roles are reversed and Milwaukee faces Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano (11-4, 2.96). The Cubs don’t catch a break, however, as they have to face the starting pitcher for the National League All Stars, Ben Sheets (10-3, 2.87). Yesterday’s game was a thrilling, even matchup and we expect more of the same today. Both pitchers have ERA’s below 3, so don’t expect this to be an offensive game.

Consider these criteria when determining a pick between the Cubs and the Brewers:

- The Cubs are 7-13 in their last 20 road games

- The Brewers are 19-9 in their own division, the NL Central

- Carlos Zambrano has been dominant against the Brewers, giving up one earned run in 13 innings

- Zambrano threw 125 pitches in his last outing, Thursday

- Despite the loss last night, the Brewers are still much better at home than Chicago is on the road: Brewers home record: 32-20, Cubs road record: 23-30

Cubs score twice in the ninth, beat Brewers

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

The Cubs won in what we predicted would be the game to watch, and we were right.  Chicago (62-44) beat Milwaukee (60-46) to put them two games up in the NL Central. C.C. Sabathia had his worst start as a Brewer, but it was by no means a bad start. He has just been outstanding as a Brewer so far. His line for Monday: 6.2 IP, 9 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 strikeouts, and 2 walks.  He wasn’t even charged with the loss. That belongs to Brewers closer Solomon Torres, who gave up two runs. The first was an RBI double by Derrek Lee that scored Alfonso Soriano. Lee finished the game 3 for 5 with 3 RBI’s, and had this quote: “I just got two strikes and I was battling, I was just trying to get a sinker up and get the barrel on it. It worked out. He left one up a little bit and I was able to stay inside it and hit it to right field.” Chad Guadin notched the win and Carlos Marmol was given the save.

MLB picks - Chicago Cubs vs Milwaukee Brewers 7/28/08 prediction and pick

Monday, July 28th, 2008

This is a 4 game series that very well could determine who the NL Central winner is. The Cubs (61-44) and the Brewers (60-45) are both teams who many experts cannot predict who will win because they are so evenly matched.

Consider these criteria when determining a pick between the Cubs and the Brewers:

- The Cubs are 22-30 when on the road

- The Brewers are 32-19

- The Brewers are 8-2 in their last 10 games, while the Cubs are 4-6 in their last 10

- C.C. Sabathia (10-8, 3.30) is 4-0 with the Brewers with a 1.30 ERA

MLB picks - Saint Louis Cardinals vs New York Mets 7/27/08 prediction and pick

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Another big game in the works at Shea today. Kyle Lohse (12-2, 3.35) for St. Louis will take on Johan Santana (8-7, 3.05) for New York. After the thrilling 14 inning offensive game last night, we should see a contrast in styles with a pitching duel today.

Consider these criteria when determining a pick for tonight’s game between the Cardinals and the Mets:

- The Mets have won 15 of their last 19 games, and 8 of their last 10 at home

- Kyle Lohse is 5-1 on the road this season

- Johan Santana is only 4-3 at home in New York but has a great ERA of 2.59

Cardinals beat Mets in extra innings (7/26/08)

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

The St. Louis Cardinals (57-48) beat the New York Mets (56-47) 10-8 at Shea Stadium in New York in 14 innings. This game was an offensive fan’s dream: 4 homeruns were hit, and a total of 37 hits, 21 by the Cards and 16 by the Mets. In the top of the 14th Albert Pujols finally hit the HR that put the Cards ahead off of Aaron Heilman, who was the last player the Mets had in the bullpen. He had pitched three innings.  Both teams had plenty of chances to win earlier: The Cards left 17 runners on base, while the Mets left 16 on.  Brad Thompson was given the win, with Heilman given the loss.

MLB picks - Saint Louis Cardinals vs New York Mets 7/26 prediction and pick

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

This game is pivotal to both teams. St. Louis needs to snap its current 5 game losing streak if they want to remain serious contenders in the NL Central race. New York needs to keep on their winning ways to help build themselves a lead in the NL East. The Mets are riding a three game winning streak after taking two out of three from the Phillies and the first game of this series. Joel Pineiro (3-4, 4.52) will take the mound for the Cardinals facing Triple-A call up Bobby Knight (0-0, 0.00) for the Mets. He was called up to replace Pedro Martinez who flew back home to the Dominican Republic after the news of his father’s death. Game time is scheduled for 7:10 PM Eastern.

Consider these criteria when determining a pick for tonight’s game between the Cardinals and the Mets:

- The Mets are on a four game winning streak.

-The Cardinals are on a five game losing streak.

- Mets SP Bobby Knight has not pitched in the major leagues since 2002, but has a Triple-A record of 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA.

Brewers score two in the ninth, sweep Cardinals

Friday, July 25th, 2008

The NL Central, hell, maybe even the whole league should be on the lookout for the Brewers. They just completed a 4 game series sweep of the Cardinals and are 7-0 on their current road trip, and are on an eight game winning streak. Ryan Braun was the catalyst of the offense, going 14-29 during the road trip, including a two run HR in the top of the ninth in St. Louis on Thursday that kept them within a game of the Cubs atop the NL Central standings. The HR from Braun came off of Cards closer Ryan Franklin, who was charged with the loss. In Braun’s own words: “To me, a game-winning homer is the best feeling in the world. There’s nothing better.”

The Brewers are also climbing up the team total HR chart, having hit one homerun in each of their last twenty games, a franchise record. Ben Sheets threw seven strong innings, but left the game when they were down 3-2 and was given a no decision. Eric Gagne pitched in the eighth to earn the win, and Solomon Torres was given the save.

Florida Marlins at Chicago Cubs preview

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

The Marlins (53-48) will head to Wrigley Field to take on the Cubs (58-42) in a showdown that has major implications for both the NL East and the NL Central.  The Marlins are currently 1 game back of both the Phillies and the Mets, who are tied atop the NL East standings.  The Cubs are hanging on to first, with a red hot Brewers team only a half game behind.  The St. Louis Cardinals are only 2.5 out as well.

As we can see, there are at least 6 teams, along with their fanbases, who should watch this series closely.  It will be a tough task for Florida to come in and take a game or two away from the Cubs, who have the best home record in the league at 37-12.  The Marlins, on the other hand, are below .500 on the road, going 24-25 in games away from Miami.  Scott Olsen (6-4, 3.84) of the Marlins is scheduled to take on Carlos Zambrano (10-4, 2.98) and the Cubs at 8:05 PM Eastern.

Brewers deny Cardinals comeback, win it in extra innings

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

In the close NL Central race, any win from here on out is an important win.  Just look at last night’s game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals, which Milwaukee won 6-3.  The win gave Milwaukee a better win percentage than St. Louis and moved them into second place behind the Chicago Cubs.  Bill Hall, who hit the go ahead homerun in the top of the 10th, had this to say:  “From the looks of it, it’s us, the Cardinals and the Cubs who will be battling for the division.  Every win is important in this division.”  After Brewers starting pitcher Seth McClung let in two runs in the bottom of the first off of a Troy Glaus double, the Brewers offense helped him out by getting 3 runs home in the top of the fifth with Rickie Weeks 9th HR of the year.  The score remained 3-2 going into the bottom of the ninth, when Yadier Molina stepped to the plate facing Solomon Torres.  Molina hit a ground rule double, and was then replaced by pinch runner Brendan Ryan.

Pinch hitter Jason LaRue moved Ryan to third, and Skip Schumaker hit a sacrifice to left to bring Ryan in to tie the game.  Before you could even blink, Milwaukee had already gained the lead again in the 10th as Bill Hall led off the inning with a HR.  The Brewers eventually got two more runs and won the game 6-3.
