Tuesday night saw the Philadelphia Phillies (67-58) defeat the Washington Nationals (44-82) in what would turn out to be an important win for Philadelphia. Phillies SP Joe Blanton gave 4 runs in 5 innings and it looked like the Phils were going to lose the game to the lowly Nationals as they were down 4-1 when Blanton went out of the game.

But as soon as he left, the Phillies offense kicked into gear, scoring twice in the 5th inning, once in the 7th, and one more run again in the 8th to beat Washington 5-4. Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth hit the tiebreaking homerun in the 8th to give Philadelphia the lead. The Phillies are a major league best 56-0 when they are up going into the 9th inning. The loss was Washington’s 11th straight, their longest since moving to Washington.

Ryan Madson (3-1) was given the win, with Steven Shell (0-1) taking the loss. Brad Lidge closed out the game to earn his 31st save in 31 opportunities.

The Milwaukee Brewers (67-51) won an important game vs. the Washington Nationals (44-77) on Sunday to improve and remain ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Wild Card race. The winning homerun was hit by Gabe Kapler, who prior to the HR was 0-6 with two strikeouts. This was Kapler’s first career walk off homerun, and it gave Milwaukee its fifth straight win. The homerun was hit off of Washington reliever Luis Ayala, who is not having a good season to put it mildly. He is 1-8 with a 6.04 ERA and 53.2 innings pitched. Kapler, who was starting for the injured Ryan Braun, hit the ball off of the foul pole to give his team the 5-4 win in 13 innings. “At first I thought it was going to stay fair for sure, then I saw it had kind of had a little lean to it,” Kapler said. “I wasn’t positive whether it would stay fair. I’m glad it did.”

Guillermo Mota (3-5) was given the win, with Luis Ayala (1-8) taking the loss.

With the Phillies holding a slim 1.5 game lead on the Marlins in the NL East, the two meet tonight, the second game of the series. The Florida Marlins (60-53) defeated the Philadelphia Phillies (61-51) 8-2 last night to take the first game. Both teams will send out young pitchers (Sanchez is 24, Kendrick is 23) to the mound. The New York Mets (58-52) took on the Houston Astros (52-57) in Houston Saturday night. It did not go as planned for New York. Once again, Johan Santana pitched a strong game and handed a 4-1 lead over to the bullpen. We all should have guessed what happened next.  Santana earns yet another no decision as the Mets lost to the Astros 5-4 in 10 innings.

Billy Wagner came in with the Mets up 4-2 and eventually loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning. Mark Loretta was on third with Hunter Pence, who was on second, immediately following him after a single by Geoff Blum.  Loretta collided with Mets catcher Ramon Castro, which jarred the ball loose.  Pence, still on Loretta’s heels, scored as well.  Loretta referenced himself playing football, as he said, “I felt like a fullback going in there. It was like a car wreck.”

The loss was big for the Mets, who now are two games behind NL East leading Philadelphia. Billy Wagner was charged with a blown save, and Aaron Heilman took the loss.  Jose Valverde was credited with the win.

The St. Louis Cardinals (57-48) beat the New York Mets (56-47) 10-8 at Shea Stadium in New York in 14 innings. This game was an offensive fan’s dream: 4 homeruns were hit, and a total of 37 hits, 21 by the Cards and 16 by the Mets. In the top of the 14th Albert Pujols finally hit the HR that put the Cards ahead off of Aaron Heilman, who was the last player the Mets had in the bullpen.
